Most at risk from the sun's rays are the European and North American fair skinned, although people with darker complexions, or whose skin tans easily, should still take care by using SunSelect products.

SUNSELECT FABRIC

Sunselect filter fabric has been developed for use as a non - applied sun protection agent and may be developed in any form of physical barrier between the sunbather and the natural radiation of the sun. While in the shade of SunSelect fabric, the sunbather is not only protected from sunburn but also able to suntan safely at the normal rate. The most common application to date has been in the form of a large parasol, but other applications such as clothing are possible.

Conventional old fashioned applied sunscreens, i.e. creams and oils, are expensive and inconvenient to use and a more consumer acceptable method of sun tanning without burning is embodied in the SunSelect product.

HOW DOES IT WORK

Until recently it was generally believed that natural ultraviolet sunlight consisted of UV-B (290-320), which caused sunburn and cancer, and UV-A (320-400) which was considered harmless at natural intensity and caused sun tanning. On the basis of these beliefs, some PVC based non-applied sunscreens were fabricated with pigments and UV - absorbers designed to block all UV-B and transmit substantially all UV-A. It is now known however: that this principle was only partially correct and a new generation of non-applied sunscreen fabrics have been devised which transmit a small proportion of UV-B (315-320nm) which stimulate new melanin synthesis and protect against further burning on exposure to the sun.

Q...What products have you to offer?

A...We would like to offer you an umbrella, tent, hammock, plus accessories that have almost magical properties using very special polyester yarns/ plastics.

Q...How can a knitted fabric become a Sun / Filter?

A...Polyester yarn has a property that totally blocks the burning rays UVB, but with years of research SunSelect has been able to perfect a yarn that transmits a good% of the tanning rays UVA.

Q...Can I tan without the UVB rays?

A...Yes, but the fabric is knitted in a special way so that a small percentage of UVB (10 to12%) passes through the holes between the stitches, you need this small % of UVB to get a continuing tanning throughout the period of prolonged exposure to the suns rays.

Q...Would it be better for me if the cover totally blocked the UVB?

A...No! if that was the case the sun tanning process would last for only one day, to make the skin darker the skin needs new melanin and the small% of UVB that pass through the fabric stimulates new melanin synthesis which tans the skin and helps propect it against further burning and further exposure to the sun.

Q...Will the fabric protect me from skin cancer?

A...The fabric naturally cuts the chances of getting skin cancer by up to 90% but due to the emotion of the word cancer we prefer to avoid using this statement when advertising. We have over many years used the statement " helps prevent known skin disorders" and this has been effective over the last 10 years.

Q...Is there any chance of me getting sunburnt?

A...Providing you stay under the protection of the umbrella No!  But we know that you may leave its protection to fetch a drink etc. In which case you should ideally put on a T Shirt or robe to protect you during the time you are exposed to direct sunlight. It takes only 10 minutes to burn a fair skinned subject during the hours of 11.00 to 14.00

Q...If I am on a 2 week vacation will I have to stay under the umbrella etc all the time?

A...No! after approximately 4/5 days under the protection of the umbrella etc, then the skin is not only well tanned but there is a protection built into the skin and will allow you to spend time out such as walking along the beach or sight seeing. The dangerous times are during the hours mentioned above, most people have lunch in the shade during this time as a norm.

Q...I read and hear that Americans and Australians now want to avoid the sun althogether due to the dangers that exist!

A...The media tells you this. We can tell you that it is safe under the protection of SunSelect, millions of people throughtout the world desire a cosmetically beautiful sun-tan, this is a fact!. It is only the scare policy of the boffins that creates such a position. If we invented a safe cigarette that gave the smoker complete satisfaction then we would be millionaires, but we have at least invented a product that the sun tanner can use with safety and beautifies the person, burnt peeling skin is not!, and the pain and discomfort of sun burn is certainly not attractive. We have to be positive and realise that there are millions of people out there that want what we have to offer, a safe quick painless sun-tan, they just need to see it and be told what the benefits of SunSelect are.

Q...Do I need to use creams or lotions with SunSelect?

A...No! Unless you decide to leave the protection of the equipment, without putting on protective clothing, we suggest that you use an after sun type cream to keep your skin soft and supple and avoids the skin drying.

Q...Will I blister and peel after I have tanned?

A...No! We have found that due to the small % of UVB reaching the skin, the skin is not burnt or damaged and thus there is no peeling or blistering. In fact not only do you not peel, we have found over the years that the UVA only tan lasts a great deal longer than a tan that has been obtained through the old method of lying in the sun  either unprotected or using creams, a big bonus for Sun Select.

Q...Where does the fabric come from?.

A...From the UK under the control of Dr. Longstaff, each production is tested and inspected for its efficiency.

Q...Are there other colours available/.

A...For the umbrellas, hammocks, and beach tents/canopys yes Pink, Royal Blue, White, and Purple. The colour pigments which are dyed on the fabric are a part of the transmission properties, after many months of dye research the colours offered are the only ones that give the desired results. A small change in the shade or colour can reduce the transmission by as much as as 30%.
